Diet Doctor: Reap the Benefits of Red Wine and Still Lose Weight. Q: I enjoy having a glass of red wine at night to unwind, but I'm concerned that it may be hindering my weight loss and health goals. Can it stay, or does it need to go? A: I've covered alcohol and weight loss in a previous Diet Doctor column (check it out here); While you may need to temporarily eliminate your evening glass of wine to reach a weight loss goal, you should add it back into your diet during the maintenance phase. There's a sweet spot regarding alcohol and health. Research shows that drinking one glass of wine four to six nights per week can help you live longer and increase your 'good' (HDL) cholesterol. These perks seem to be attributed to alcohol in general, not specifically to red wine. However, a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reveals a new benefit of drinking that is specific to the antioxidants found in red wine—digestive health. Your digestive tract houses a wide variety of bacteria, some good, some bad. Decreases in good bacteria and/or increases in bad bacteria have been linked to a growing list of health issues, including weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease. Red wine can help shift the types of bacteria in your digestive track so there's more of the good kind, making you healthier and potentially leaner. Here's how it works: Red wine's red color comes from antioxidants called polyphenols. Polyphenols can help improve your health in a variety of ways, but one problem with certain polyphenols, especially the ones in red wine, is that your body doesn't absorb them very well. It has been estimated that almost half of the polyphenols consumed are not absorbed during the normal initial phases of digestion. While this sounds like a bad thing, the unabsorbed polyphenols become food for the good bacteria in your digestive track. This is exactly what Spanish researchers found when they examined the digestive tracks of people who drank red wine every day for 2. In addition to improving the quality of the bacteria in digestive tracts, study participants also saw improvement in several major risk factors for cardiovascular disease, like triglyceride levels. This is likely due to the fact that the good bacteria in your digestive tract can help improve metabolism for a faster rate of burning that fat. The bottom line: Enjoy your nightly glass of red wine (4- 6oz) to reap the benefits of a longer life, higher good cholesterol levels, and improved digestion and metabolism. French lessons: Eat petite, be petite - Health - Diet and nutrition - Nutrition Notes. Obesity is far less common in France than in the United States, and some researchers contend that smaller French portions are a key reason. But many doctors are puzzled because the operation doesn't carry a 1. Themselves, survey says. Some Americans might assume they will feel deprived with smaller portions, but cross- cultural studies suggest we might find portion control surprisingly easy if we adopted some French eating customs and philosophies. The contrast in obesity between France and the U. S. The French are more physically active than Americans, which may account for part of this weight difference, but smaller portions in France also lead to lower calorie consumption. Petite portions. And one thing I just want to make a note about is, when we have medical professions who take the leap to speak to the public, it’s something that I think needs to be recognized more and more. Because a lot of folks who would have the expertise and understanding the science and how it works; or the capacity for it, either don’t make that leap whether it’s just, you know, they only want to be working in their practice with their patients, or I honestly think there’s a way of translating what you may research and discover in a way that everyday people can understand that’s a special kind of gift that not everybody who can read and understand science has. Someone like Robb Wolf, who is a research biochemist; for him to be able to speak to the public; and for you to be able to speak to the public about this stuff, I think that’s a gift and I’m grateful that you share that with the world, so thank you from all of our listeners. Dr. Terry Wahls: You know, early on when I made this decision to start talking to the public, I didn’t have my research out yet, so I was just telling my story. And oh, I got a lot of pushback from the medical community, that I was creating false hope; that it was immoral that I was doing this. I got called in several times, warned to not do this. So I kept at it, and tried to be very, very careful about telling my story and not making claims. There’s a way of doing this; but it is a lot of work, and most physicians have to deal with pushback in the beginning. So I understand why many physicians are like; no, it’s too much work to take this on. Diane Sanfilippo: I think that’s pretty common of, I would say the general population of anything that has this extra layer or level of responsibility and challenge and, you know, society telling you that you shouldn’t do XYZ; whatever it is. Different people experience that in different ways, and I think in the medical community, there is probably just a really heightened level of that, because other doctors may be afraid of being called out for having been wrong about something, or not telling a patient about this option. Dr. Terry Wahls: Oh yeah. Diane Sanfilippo: Or what have you. I just think it’s the ultimate responsibility to take to share information that could help other people. Dr. Terry Wahls: Well, you know my response was that it felt immoral to not share my story. That to me the only choice I had was that I had to tell my story; that if I could recover using this pretty simple diet and lifestyle thing. Simple, but hard; other people might be able to have a lot of improvements, as well, with whatever their illness. Because I couldn’t sit up; that’s how ill I was. The Arthritis Diet . Following a diet low in processed foods and saturated fat and rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts and beans is great for your body. If this advice looks familiar, it’s because these are the principles of the so- called Mediterranean diet, which is frequently touted for its anti- aging, disease- fighting powers. Studies confirm eating these foods can do the following: Lower blood pressure. Protect against chronic conditions ranging from cancer to stroke. Help arthritis by curbing inflammation. Benefit your joints as well as your heart. Lead to weight loss, which makes a huge difference in managing joint pain. Whether you call it a Mediterranean diet, an anti- inflammatory diet or simply an arthritis diet, here’s a look at key foods to focus on – and why they’re so good for joint health. Fish. How much: Health auth. Arthritis experts claim more is better. Why: Some types of fish are good sources of inflammation- fighting omega- 3 fatty acids. Why: Olive oil is loaded with heart- healthy fats, as well as oleocanthal, which has properties similar to nonsteroidal, anti- inflammatory drugs. Inhibiting these enzymes dampens the body’s inflammatory processes and reduces pain sensitivity. Best sources: Extra virgin olive oil goes through less refining and processing, so it retains more nutrients than standard varieties. And it’s not the only oil with health benefits. How much: About one cup, twice a week (or more)Why: Beans are loaded with fiber and phytonutrients, which help lower CRP, an indi. At high levels, CRP could indicate anything from an infection to RA. Whole Grains. How much: Eat a total of 6 ounces of grains per day; at least 3 of which should come from whole grains. One ounce of whole grain would be equal to . Some studies have also shown that fiber and fiber- rich foods can lower blood levels of the the inflammatory marker C- reactive protein. Best sources: Eat foods made with the entire grain kernel, like whole- wheat flour, oatmeal, bulgur, brown rice, quinoa. Some people may need to be careful about which whole grains they eat. Gluten – a protein found in wheat and other grains – has been linked to inflammation for some people. Should You Avoid Nightshades? Nightshade vegetables, including eggplant, tomatoes, red bell peppers and potatoes, are disease- fighting power. There’s no scientific evidence to suggest that nightshades trigger arthritis flares. In fact, some experts believe these vegetables contain a potent nutrient mix that helps inhibit arthritis pain. However, many people do report significant symptom relief when they avoid nightshade vegetables. So doctors say, if you notice that your arthritis pain flares after eating them, do a test and try eliminating all nightshade vegetables from your diet for a few weeks to see if it makes a difference. Iodine is a trace element that is naturally present in some foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. Iodine is an essential component of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Thyroid hormones regulate many important biochemical reactions, including protein synthesis and enzymatic activity, and are critical determinants of metabolic activity . They are also required for proper skeletal and central nervous system development in fetuses and infants . It is secreted by the pituitary gland to control thyroid hormone production and secretion, thereby protecting the body from hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism . TSH secretion increases thyroidal uptake of iodine and stimulates the synthesis and release of T3 and T4. In the absence of sufficient iodine, TSH levels remain elevated, leading to goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland that reflects the body's attempt to trap more iodine from the circulation and produce thyroid hormones. Iodine may have other physiological functions in the body as well. For example, it appears to play a role in immune response and might have a beneficial effect on mammary dysplasia and fibrocystic breast disease . In some regions of the world, iodine- deficient soils are common, increasing the risk of iodine deficiency among people who consume foods primarily from those areas. Salt iodization programs, which many countries have implemented, have dramatically reduced the prevalence of iodine deficiency worldwide . Iodine rarely occurs as the element, but rather as a salt; for this reason, it is referred to as iodide and not iodine. Iodide is quickly and almost completely absorbed in the stomach and duodenum. Iodate is reduced in the gastrointestinal tract and absorbed as iodide . When iodide enters the circulation, the thyroid gland concentrates it in appropriate amounts for thyroid hormone synthesis and most of the remaining amount is excreted in the urine . The iodine- replete healthy adult has about 1. Values lower than 1. L in children and non- pregnant adults indicate insufficient iodine intake, although iodine deficiency is not classified as severe until urinary iodine levels are lower than 2. L. Recommended Intakes.
